Barcelona won’t have large technology shows this year

All the stakeholders know that, for the foreseeable future, massive, multinational events can’t happen in the same way.

Many countries will still have severe travel restrictions, both leaving their territories and coming back home. China, where the SARS-CoV-2 virus initially appeared, still imposes a 14-day quarantine on all travelers arriving in the country.

Large corporate tech conferences, such as VMworld (both US and European), Amazon’s European Summit, and Apple’s WWDC, have been converted into online-only events. Google I/O, the popular developer conference for all things Google, will not happen in any capacity this year, and the GSMA already announced the cancellation of Mobile World Congress Shanghai.

Cities, such as Barcelona, whose economies depend heavily on tourism and conventions will have to reinvent themselves as a destination.
