Automation at seaports – which in part prompted dockworkers in the U.S. to strike earlier this year — is getting a more measured reception in the EU
During the recent Tomorrow.BlueEconomy congress Dr. Phanthian Zuesongdham, director of port process solutions at the Hamburg Port Authority, gave a keynote address about automation, including the use of drones. She firmly argued that automation is essential for the future, but she emphasized that implementation must be thoughtful and collaborative.
In an exclusive interview with EPSNews during the conference, Zuesongdham indicated that European ports adopt a strategy different from that of other regions.
Zuesongdham notes that European ports operate within a tighter web of regulations, with strong labor unions often advocating for worker protection. This necessitates a more balanced approach to automation, one that considers the social and economic impact on port communities. “European ports have automation plans, but the speed of implementation is moderate because the port ecosystem within Europe is closely linked to the cities,” …….
